Alex Ebstein, Spirit Cleanse and Basic Detox, 2017 (Hand-Cut PVC Yoga Mats, Acrylic on Wood Panel) @VICTORI + MO Gallery, NY
Today I am starting a cleanse/detox (thanks D!) and honestly? I am hungry and don’t see much the point (sorry D.)
I don’t really need to lose weight, I am generally healthy, but after all the excess of booze/smoke/fat food from the festivities, this cleanse seemed a good idea. But, this is the weekend and I miss the cooking part. Plus, drinking juice the whole day and having to wee every half an hour is annoying. I miss my bread, my coffee and don’t feel energised enough for a run. So nope, not for me.
However, I realise I would need a detox not so much for my body but for my mind. I am still a bit all over the space in my head, my novel is still far to be done (well, I know it will never be), I tend to shut me down from my friends and family, and my heart is still feeling weird and confused. I know going back to meditation and running more often would help but somehow, I feel paralysed.
This is why today, this piece of Alex Ebstein is weirdly soothing because similar to my own mind at the moment: even with the right tool (as per the yoga mat material used in the work), we are far from the peace of mind we seek. Unlike the visual balance of a mandala, the forms here doesn’t make much sense, but that’s ok.
