Interesting talk last night with the curator Heba Abd el Gawad for her exhibition Listen to her! at the Petrie Museum of London. We are still far away to reach equality between men and women but this sad reality is even more painful in too many countries like Egypt.
She and other participants from other middle east countries like Iran, explained that feminism is viewed by their governments as a bargain with Europe/US relationship but not as a real need that should be pursued. The new generations is willing to change (Men wearing Hijab movement for instance) but there is still a long way to go. This, is particularly flagrant when street arts with a feminist message are scrapped by people almost as soon as it is done when others with different political messages stay longer in comparison.
We need indeed to listen their voices but also support their fight.
On this subject, I encourage you to read this report from Amnesty International and check this amazing book Wall of Freedom
